BoxSnax #11: NBA Enters Blockchain Gaming, Do the DAOG, Cheeze Wizards Hackathon & Mold Magicians, Sandbox Exports to Minecraft
NBA Enters Blockchain Gaming: Dapper Labs Announces an NBA Game, Do the DAOG: Inventive New Game, Cheeze Wizards Hackathon & Ultra Rare Mold Magicians, The Sandbox Creations Now Export to Minecraft
NBA Enters Blockchain Gaming
Dapper Labs announced today they will be partnering with the NBA and NBPA to create a basketball collectibles game on blockchain, called NBA Top Shot. Players will be able to buy, sell, collect, and trade their NFTs of players and in-game moments.
This is a huge for blockchain gaming. Basketball is quickly growing in popularity and as a global sport, with about $6 Billion in dollars in revenue a year, and 825 Million fans globally. I’d expect NBA Top Shot to have similar, if not greater success, than Baseball’s blockchain endeavor: MLB Champions.
I’m Excited to see this project’s release, and in the meantime, you can check it out here and sign up for early access.
The DAOG: Inventive New Game Makes Decentralized Governance Fun
“DAOG”, the Decentralized Autonomous Organization Game, was unveiled Friday by creator Austin Griffith (see full walkthrough above). The core of the game is to build things on a game board, which allows you to collect resources to build even more things, all while vying for land and resources against other players. Players vote on rules and changing rules, whilst trying to reach a victory condition. Players must buy into a game, and can also “rage quit” to leave a game and get a percentage of their money back (The % of your money you can get back for quitting decreases as the game progresses).
In place of 2D or 3D models Griffith uses emojis as graphics. Every environment (game board type) starts with at least 1 inventory item and 1 buildable item, both represented by emojis. There are 4 items types: inventory (used to buy/build other items), buildable, discoverable, and growable. Anyone can add a new rule by adding a new emoji backed by a generic or custom smart contract.
Initially the blocks on the board are hidden, and are revealed as you build and explore within the “influence” of your on map items. Influence is an item attribute that determines how many blocks on the map are discoverable within the area of an item.
When victory condition is met, that player wins, and is rewarded with a large chunk of the pot. A small chunk is then divided evenly amongst anyone who successfully deployed a game rule/mechanic (rewards for developers).
DAOG makes great use of the pre-existing structure of MolochDAO, and makes for interesting gameplay incorporating player voting and “politicking” as Griffith says. Oh and being able to win some assets is always fun.
Cheeze Wizards: Hackathon & Mold Magicians
Hackathon Begins Tomorrow
Cheeze Wizards is partnering with CoinList to hold a hackathon starting August 1st. Prizes include: $15K+ in cash and limited-edition Cheeze Wizards, advisory sessions with the Dapper Labs team, and a chance for your project to be reviewed by Dapper Labs investors.
One overall winner, as well as 3 category winners will be chosen. Categories are: Tools & features, 3rd party experiences, Tournament & league. There are also 2 Tech partner bounties: 0x bounty - $2,000 and Kyber Network bounty - $2,000.
In addition to awards and prizes, building a project on top of Cheeze Wizards lets you leverage an existing qualified and engaged userbase, and you receive 100% of the profits your project generates; not too shabby!
Final submissions are on September 1st. Sign up here.
The Mold Magicians
Yesterday Cheeze Wizards unveiled their ultra rare mold magicians. The first 3 mold magicians sold for 4.87, 5.27, and 5.42 ETH each (over $1,000). There is still currently 1 mold magician (#249) on sale here. It does not appear that the wizards have any special effects/attributes at the moment, other than their high scarcity.
